During Fall semester 2017, I assisted prof. Marcus Shaffer in the MACHINES SESSIONS class. The class is directed to both undergraduate and graduate students, and no previous experience or software knowledge is required. The class then had students from different programs, and different level of expertise in computational design.
Particularly, I am interested in assisting in tool design for the robot with the students. The students developed and tested several iterations of the tools for their projects. 3D printing was used for prototyping the tools, for adjustment and improvement of the tool.
Another interesting part for me is assisting in the design of the tool-path. I enjoy assisting in the adjustment of each tool-path and robot orientation appropriate for each project. For instance, one of the projects was about hacking a 3D pen and attaching it to the robot to automate the tool. We soon learnt that a specific orientation worked best for using the pen.
